Sandra's grandparents, William and Jenny Johnson, moved with four children in covered wagons from Coahoma, Texas to three miles northeast of Knowles to homestead in 1909. Mrs. Johnson and the children lived out the five years required to complete their homestead plan while Mr. Johnson worked as a mule skinner on the Texas south plains to earn cash for the family. In 1913, Mr. Johnson traded the homestead for 320 acres near Slaton, Texas. The public notice of Mr. Johnson's final three year proof of claim is published on page 4 shown below. |
